The theft of farming machinery, with tractors, tele-handlers and quads being the most at risk items, continues to rise. Police forces and farm watch groups around the country are reporting spates of incidents with some areas describing the problem as an epidemic. The new wave is being fuelled by a number of factors, including economic pressures, criminal gangs identifying what they see as ‘soft’ targets (it’s no secret that ignition keys offer little or no protection) and also a huge demand for quality machinery from abroad.

“Organised crime gangs are quick to identify new or emerging markets. We’ve always had a problem with assets being shipped to Eastern Europe and Africa, but even more of a concern is the spread to Afghanistan and Iraq. Valuable agricultural and plant equipment are currently in massive demand as both countries re-build”

The vast majority of stolen agricultural or plant equipment is never seen again, with less than 5% typically being recovered. Whilst at the Caravan and Motorhome exhibition at the NEC we heard from numerous Land Rover Defender and also Discovery owners who had either lost their own vehicles or had friends or fellow owners club members who had suffered the loss of their prized Landy.....

Sadly because parts are always in such high demand and can be easily shipped abroad none of those cases we heard about ended up with the vehicle being recovered for the owners. Searching the internet it seems that this is an ongoing problem. We are currently discussing this issue with a number of the Land Rover owners clubs (there are quite a few!) and hope to be communicating with their members very soon.
